Is your idea a fad, or is it at the forefront of something bigger? A fad is a short-lived trend whereas the forefront of something bigger can be of relevance for years to come.
When you invest in starting and building a business from your ideas, consider whether your ideas are single products and services, or whether they are foundations for an exit-able business affecting hundreds or thousands of people.
Woo…big stuff!
So you had a great idea and all you wanted to do was start a business around it. You weren’t thinking of exit plans and leaving a legacy. Or were you? Are you?
Let me give you something to ponder and assess. I suggest that you take a couple of trusted advisors to dinner to help you with this. Or pose these questions to your Idea MindTeam™ as an issue to process. Look at your idea as not just an idea in and of itself, but as the foundation for future growth and discovery. What can you build around your idea; add to it; grow from it? How can your idea impact a world beyond your ideal client? How might your great-grandchildren (or your neighbor’s great grands) use what spawns from your idea decades from now?
Here’s an example of what I mean by fad or forefront that may help you with this exercise.
– A big idea in the financial arena is cryptocurrency. Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Zcash are types of cryptocurrency at this time. The buzz around cryptocurrencies constitutes a fad. Some will go the way of 8-track tapes. Yet the idea that is their FOUNDATION is a technology called blockchain. Don’t ask me to explain it. Just know that the technology will have other applications lasting far into the future.
– A more common-use example is the idea of person-to-person voice communication across distances. Alexander Graham Bell is traditionally considered the inventor of the telephone. The devices evolve across generations. Product iterations are fads. Yet the IDEA of such communication endures into its second century. Entire industries spawn with possibilities for implementation beyond our planet. The masterminds of Bell, Edison, and others had a forefront idea beyond fad.
So imagine your idea as the forefront to something big. How far can you take it? Will it be you or someone else? This is big thinking, yet you can find magic to implement after thinking big.
