Are you so passionate about an issue that you want to create, or join, a movement?
What happens to that movement after a few days, or weeks, or months?
Does it die, fade into the background…or gain momentum?
How do you make sure that momentum happens so that your movement; your mission; your idea doesn’t fade away from inaction?
There seems to be a “hashtag issue” arising weekly in the news and trending on social media. Some last a long time – like #METOO, #BLACKLIVESMATTER, and #GUNCONTROL. Some come and go quickly with the issue-of-the-day.
So how do you move your idea from just-a-notion to issue-in-motion?
Here are three actions I’ve observed that are common to long-term, established movements, that you can apply to your idea to give momentum to yours.
1. Develop your idea messaging to reach people’s hearts and cause them to personally relate to and feel the story you tell. Have facts and numbers that validate your story so that people perceive it as more than just fluff.
2. Enlist people who are influencers either by the numbers of people they reach online or offline or by their roles, to have a stake in and support your movement and spread your message.
3. Work out a solid plan of action to keep your idea top-of-mind over time, give specific responsibilities to the people who support you. Tie new situations that arise to the relevance of your movement.
Create the blueprint to turn your movement into momentum so that you can transform your ideas into action and impact the world.
